3500 TPD Domestic Wastewater UV Disinfection Case in China

Published 16 October 2026 · Customer identity withheld

KONCHE supplied an open-channel UV disinfection system for a domestic wastewater project in China with a treatment capacity of 3,500 tonnes per day. The project passed acceptance, met its Class I A discharge requirements and entered operation. The installation used two UV modules with a combined rated lamp-bank power of 3.84 kW, supported by PLC and touchscreen controls. Its selection brings together the water-quality inputs, channel dimensions and control requirements that wastewater owners and engineering contractors need to establish before ordering equipment.

Domestic wastewater treatment and the UV selection requirements

For this project, the treatment medium was domestic wastewater and the discharge requirement was China's Class I A standard. UV disinfection formed part of the wastewater treatment system; it was not a substitute for the upstream processes addressing other effluent parameters. The Chinese municipal wastewater discharge standard provides the regulatory context for the project's discharge classification.

The selection basis specified UV transmittance, or UVT, of at least 65%. The proposal also recommended filtration ahead of UV to reduce total suspended solids, or TSS, to no more than 10 mg/L. This was a pretreatment recommendation, not a measured operating result. These water-quality conditions accompanied the flow requirement rather than being added after equipment selection.

For an EPC contractor preparing a comparable package, that distinction matters: a daily treatment capacity is only one input. The available channel, water-quality conditions and controls also need to be included in the equipment enquiry.

Supplied UV equipment and installation dimensions

Item Project configuration
Treatment medium Domestic wastewater
Project treatment capacity 3,500 tonnes/day
Discharge requirement China Class I A
UV equipment model KCW-UV3.84KW
Quantity One system
Module configuration Two modules, six lamps per module
Lamp quantity and rating 12 lamps, 320 W each
Combined rated lamp-bank power 3.84 kW
Module material Stainless steel 304
Equipment dimensions 2.2 × 0.2 × 1.05 m
Channel dimensions 3.55 × 0.3 × 1.05 m
Effective lamp immersion depth 0.6 m
Electrical supply 380 V, 50 Hz
Controls PLC and touchscreen, with a water-level sensor

The lamp configuration gives 2 × 6 × 320 W = 3,840 W, or 3.84 kW. This is the lamp-bank rating, not a measured whole-system electricity consumption figure.

The supply included 12 quartz sleeves and 12 electronic ballasts, with a specified ballast power factor of 0.98. The package also contained a stainless steel water tank and a flow-rectifying grid. These installation components belonged to the project scope alongside the UV modules, rather than leaving the equipment description at lamp quantity alone.

What water quality and channel information should an EPC provide for a UV quotation?

This project illustrates a practical starting point for a technical enquiry. Provide the daily treatment capacity and peak flow separately, then identify the treated wastewater entering the UV stage. Include the applicable discharge requirement, UVT information, suspended-solids data and any upstream filtration.

The channel drawing should show the available length, width and depth, together with operating water levels and the proposed equipment position. Here, the equipment dimensions and the channel dimensions were specified separately, and the effective lamp immersion depth was 0.6 m. A replacement system should not be selected by matching the daily capacity alone while overlooking those interfaces.

Finally, state the electrical supply and the required control functions. This installation used 380 V, 50 Hz power and a PLC with a touchscreen. The UV system sizing guide provides a broader introduction to preparing the selection inputs.

PLC controls and the supplied cleaning components

The control package combined a PLC, touchscreen and water-level sensor. This gave the project a defined control interface in addition to the UV lamp and ballast assembly.

The cleaning hardware comprised two cylinders, two cleaning racks and one air compressor. These were supplied with the two-module arrangement. The equipment scope should be kept distinct from a site's operating schedule: cleaning intervals and operating settings belong in the project-specific operating instructions.

The KONCHE lamps specified for this project had a rated life of 12,000 hours. That rating applies to this project's lamps, not to every UV lamp in the KONCHE portfolio. Replacement purchasing should match the installed lamps and associated components; the UV disinfection consumables page covers the relevant replacement category.

Project acceptance and operation

The 3,500-tonne/day domestic wastewater project passed acceptance, achieved its Class I A discharge requirements and entered operation. It adds a specific operating reference to KONCHE's wastewater UV experience: a two-module system with defined water-quality inputs, channel geometry and PLC controls.

For a different installation scale and configuration, the municipal wastewater open-channel UV case provides a related project reference.

Frequently asked questions

Was this UV installation put into operation?

Yes. The project passed acceptance, met its Class I A discharge requirements and entered operation.

Does the 65% UVT figure describe a site measurement?

It is the UVT selection input specified in the project proposal. The recommendation to reduce TSS to no more than 10 mg/L through filtration is also part of that proposal, rather than a published operating measurement.

Does 3.84 kW represent the electricity use of the entire installation?

No. It is the combined rated power of 12 lamps at 320 W each. Whole-system electricity use also depends on the other supplied components and operating conditions.

Can the same configuration be used for another 3,500-tonne/day plant?

It is a relevant project reference, not a universal selection. Send the flow profile, UVT, suspended-solids data, discharge requirement and channel drawing so the configuration can be assessed against the new installation.
